Lts Brewer and Aylstock Complete Leadership Course

July 23, 2020

2nd Lt Heather Brewer and 2nd Lt Roger Aylstock recently completed the Squadron Leadership School (SLS) Course on 16 Jul 2020. This virtual course, hosted by the Texas Wing, was held three evenings over two weeks and included over 12 contact hours.  The SLS course is one of the required items for a senior member to advance in the program. The SLS provides CAP's adult members with a basic understanding of CAP operations at the squadron level and how those operations affect CAP's national missions. Additionally, student learn more about CAP customs, core values, and communications. The SLS has blocks on Volunteer Service, Role of the Squadron and its staff, Foundation for Leadership, and Communications. The course was taught by several guest speakers from across the Texas Wing and CAP. One of the highlights was a session taught by Maj Gen Mark Smith, the CAP National Commander. In addition, the Texas Wing Commander, Col William Schroder participated during the graduation ceremony.

Below is the graduation photo from the virtual course.

2nd Lt Brewer had this to say about the course, "Much good information on CAP operations was given at SLS this summer. Some of our national and state leaders shared their expertise allowing us to hear directly from the horse's mouth about many of the upcoming changes CAP will be instituting."

2nd Lt Aylstock provided these comments about the course, "What a great opportunity to be instructed by many of the thought leaders from within Civil Air Patrol.  The best session for me was the session taught by our CAP National Commander, Maj Gen Mark Smith. He took the time from his schedule to lead a two hour session on Leadership, Influencing and directing people. He also stayed after class for a virtual question and answer period. It was invaluable to hear from such a wide range of leaders during this class."

In addition, 2nd Lt Aylstock also completed the Officer Basic Course. This on-line course is also a requirement for advancement as a senior member.
