Throwback Thursday with 2nd Lt Kathy Ferguson

May 7, 2020

Welcome to our third installment of our Throwback Thursday feature. Today we feature Kathy Ferguson in a picture of just a few years ago. Kathy said that since she was the family photographer, it was hard to find a picture with just her. This is her official picture as Commander of the Angel Flight Unit attached to the Air Force ROTC at San Diego State University in 1968-69.

Kathy met her husband Lt Col Rich Ferguson at an annual joint ROTC/Angel picnic.  They married when he finished pilot training in 1970 when she graduated from San Diego State University. She said that she looked forward to marrying an Air Force pilot to see the world.

Kathy travelled with Rich to his various assignments: first to Norton AFB in San Bernardino (two hours north of San Diego), then to Altus, OK, for two months twice during Rich's C-141 training, while assigned at Norton AFB for two years.  Rich continued to fly around the world while Kathy delivered twin boys with a two-year-old girl at home.

The Ferguson’s have a 50th anniversary rapidly approaching. Kathy was in the middle of planning a trip to Europe this fall when COVID-19 arrived.  Kathy said that their anniversary will be memorable for all the wrong reasons. So much for seeing the world!

Kathy joined CAP Feb 2011 when Rich asked her to assist him in supervising cadet activities.  She helped him in Administration for two Texas Wing Encampments, teaching cadets how to use Excel for the many spreadsheets needed to capture information at these encampments, as well as overall supervision/support.  She has assisted him at various events attended by cadets such as Commemorative Air Force Hangar Dances through the years where our unit provided the Color Guard.

Thank you Kathy for your dedication and support of Civil Air Patrol!
